Travel Money

Queuing up at the airport is just no fun.  As if having to wait for ages after check in isn’t enough, and those airports where there is only one shop which sells bad paperbacks…..then you realise you have to sort out travel money.  Or, even better, you leave it until you have arrived at your destination.  Then you have the added joy of ordering currency in a foreign language.  And the rates?  You hand over a nice wad of cash and receive three or four notes in return!  That is why there is only one way to pay abroad, and it involves doing it in advance!  Sound complicated?  It really isn’t – travel money is quickest sorted online and it can even be delivered straight to your door.  Easy peasy – and the best thing is that online providers won’t give you bad rates as they are able to give the best on the market.  So your wad of cash stays your wad of cash, just in another currency!  It really couldn’t be simpler, and it means less time standing around when you could be enjoying your holiday.  There are literally hundreds of providers online, so it is best to really have a good ‘window shop’ before choosing one.  Some have added perks, some specialise in unusual currencies.  Most will not charge commission and offer free buyback on unused currency.  Check the rate as this is updated frequently, then compare it with another provider – you may find there is a much better deal around the corner.  One thing is certain: it’ll be easier and cheaper than doing it at a regular bureau de change!

What about the Travel money card?

Ok so we know about where to get the travel money.  But what about the form in which we’re going to order it?  It could be just regular money notes but once there are more than a few, it can turn into a hassle.  Where to store the money?  How safe is the destination and will it get stolen from the hotel room?  What if it gets lost?  That is why there is a really easy new way to use money abroad – the Travel money card!  This is so simple it’s a wonder not more people are using it.  Based on the principle of a regular debit or credit card, the travel money card is loaded with your chosen amount of currency, and off you go!  It will be provided together with one of the main card types (such as MasterCard) so acceptance will be easy.  If the card goes lost or stolen, a new card can be ordered.  Funds that were unused will be loaded on the new card, so there is nothing to worry about.  The exchange rate will be really competitive and fees for withdrawals much lower than using a normal credit card.  Even better, you can keep unused currency on the card for the next trip, or request free buyback.  Travellers cheques are still offered by many travel currency providers but they just seem outdated next to the travel money card.  They are large, cumbersome, require ID to exchange, and many shops and restaurants refuse them.  The travel money card is definitely the new way to pay on your holiday!
